About Howard
I’m Howard Anderson, a Canadian vocalist, saxophonist, pianist, composer and songsmith who’s had the joy of sharing music across genres and continents.
Finding My Voice: Early Years of Discovery
Music has been part of my life since as early as I can remember. Growing up in Toronto, Canada, I started playing piano at age five and picked up the saxophone at ten. Those first notes ignited something in me that would grow into a lifelong journey. I spent hours in practice, learning the language of music and letting it become my voice.
In 1994, I dove deeper into my craft at Humber College, where I had the privilege to study saxophone under Pat LaBarbera and piano with Don Thompson. It was an intense and transformative time; every lesson revealed new dimensions of jazz, R&B, and beyond. In 1999, I traveled to Jacksonville, Florida, to continue my saxophone studies with Bunky Green at the University of North Florida. These years were a whirlwind of discovery, pushing boundaries and learning from some of the finest musicians.
Through Cities, Stages, and New Horizons
After my studies, I split my time between Toronto and New York City, two vibrant music scenes that became my playground and training ground. I was lucky to work alongside incredible musicians and hone my craft in studios, jazz clubs, and live venues. Those years taught me resilience, humility, and how to connect with an audience on a deep, personal level.
Eventually, the beauty and calm of Canada’s west coast called me, and I made it my home base. Here, I’ve found new inspiration in the landscapes, the people, and the community. I’ve continued performing, recording, and refining my music. Now, as a solo performer, sideman, and bandleader, I bring my stories to life on stage, connecting with audiences from Canada to Mexico and Europe.
Music, to me, is more than sound—it’s a language, a connection, a chance to share something timeless. As I continue this journey, I’m excited for what lies ahead, the songs yet to be written, and the audiences yet to be met. Thank you for being part of it.
